History of Zentrum-Nord

Floodplain Landscape and Northern Fields

Before modern urban development, the northern side of Leipzig was influenced by the low-lying floodplain of the Parthe and the wider Auwald landscape. The Rosental, whose name refers to the rose garden or meadow landscape associated with the area, formed part of the open northern setting beyond the historic city. Woodland, meadows and watercourses limited extensive building and helped preserve the green character that remains important to Zentrum-Nord today.
