Discover more about Drewitzer See mit Lübowsee und Dreiersee

The Drewitzer See, along with its neighboring lakes Lübowsee and Dreiersee, forms a captivating natural reserve in the Mecklenburg Lake District. Located north of Alt Schwerin, within the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park, this 1455-hectare protected area offers a serene escape into nature's embrace. The Drewitzer See itself is a clear, calcareous lake, stretching 4.6 kilometers in length and varying between 200 and 2000 meters in width. Formed by an ice-age glacial meltwater channel, the lake is fed by calcium-rich groundwater and lacks natural above-ground inflows or outflows. Its western shore borders the A19 autobahn, providing convenient access while preserving the area's tranquility. The lake's underwater fauna is particularly noteworthy, featuring diverse stonewort algae. While the southern part of Drewitzer See experiences increasing nutrient loads, the overall condition of the area is considered good, making it a haven for aquatic life and a delight for nature enthusiasts. Historically, the area underwent significant transformations. Originally characterized by open landscapes, forests were planted with pines starting in the 19th century, coinciding with the advent of systematic forestry. Drainage ditches were also introduced to partially drain the moors. After 1945, arable and grassland areas west of Drewitzer See were reforested. From the 1960s, the area saw increasing tourist activity. From 1962 to 1990, the forests served as a state hunting ground. In 1978, the autobahn was constructed, further shaping the landscape. For those seeking outdoor adventures, the Drewitzer See area offers a plethora of activities. Well-marked cycling paths cater to all skill levels, with routes leading along the shores of Drewitzer See to the idyllic Lübowsee, or through unspoiled natural areas to charming villages like Lübow and Klocksin. More advanced cyclists can embark on a challenging tour across all three lakes, rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Hiking enthusiasts will find numerous scenic trails, including a leisurely stroll along the "Dort steht Derwitzer See" (There Stands Derwitzer See) path. The area is also a designated Special Area of Conservation (Habitats Directive), emphasizing its ecological importance and commitment to preserving its natural beauty. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the diverse avian life, with opportunities to spot various species in their natural habitat. The surrounding forests and meadows provide ample opportunities for wildlife observation, allowing visitors to connect with nature on a deeper level. In 1982, a hunting residence was built directly on the lake for Erich Honecker, the Chairman of the State Council of the German Democratic Republic, within the former state hunting area of Nossentiner Heide. After 1998, the facility was converted into a hotel complex with holiday homes. Today, it covers 14 hectares and was auctioned off on November 21, 2011, to the previous hotel operator. The Van der Valk Naturresort Drewitz is located on the shores of the lake, offering visitors a comfortable base from which to explore the area. Whether you're seeking a relaxing lakeside retreat, an active outdoor adventure, or a glimpse into the region's history, Drewitzer See and its surrounding lakes offer an unforgettable experience. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty, explore the charming villages, and discover the rich biodiversity of this hidden gem in the Mecklenburg Lake District. The area is a haven for those seeking tranquility and a connection with nature, making it a must-visit destination for any traveler.
