Overview
Fort Flémalle, located a few kilometers from Liège, stands as a powerful reminder of Belgium's military history. Constructed in the late 19th century under General Henri Alexis Brialmont, it formed part of a network of fortifications designed to protect Liège. Unlike contemporary French forts, Flémalle was built using unreinforced concrete, a relatively new material at the time. The fort played a significant role in both World Wars, enduring heavy bombardment during the Battle of Liège in World War I and again in 1940 during World War II. It was one of the last forts to surrender during the First World War, and its defense provided critical support to the Belgian army in the Second World War. The scars of these battles are still visible today, with vast craters attesting to the intensity of the bombardments.Today, Fort Flémalle is preserved as a museum, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience. Explore the underground galleries to understand the daily lives of the soldiers who were stationed there. The museum displays a collection of military objects from both wars, including weapons, uniforms, and medical equipment. A virtual reality tour allows visitors to experience the fort as it was in 1940, providing a vivid understanding of the changes in defense techniques between the wars.Guided tours, led by knowledgeable volunteers, provide insights into the fort's history and its role in the defense of Liège. Comfortable walking shoes and warm clothing are recommended for exploring the fort's extensive grounds.
