Place du Marché, the Market Square, stands as a vibrant testament to Liège's rich history and enduring spirit. As one of the city's oldest squares, its origins trace back to the very beginnings of Liège. Throughout the ages, it has served as a central gathering place, a forum for commerce, and a stage for civic life.The square's architecture reflects its layered past. The Place du Marché was destroyed in 1691 by Louis XIV's troops. The rebuilt square showcases a classical style, with many buildings dating back to the late 17th and 18th centuries. The U-shaped plan incorporates the work of local artists.Dominating the square are two iconic landmarks: the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) and the Perron. The Hôtel de Ville, also known as La Violette, was rebuilt between 1714 and 1718 after being damaged in the 1691 bombing. The Perron, a fountain topped with a column, is a powerful symbol of Liège's communal liberties. The original Perron was removed to Bruges in 1467 by Charles the Bold but was returned in 1477. The current fountain was reconstructed by Jean Del Cour in the late 17th century.Today, Place du Marché is a bustling hub, lined with restaurants, taverns, and shops. It hosts events throughout the year.
