Schloss Nossen: A Renaissance Jewel

Schloss Nossen, majestically situated in the town of Nossen, Saxony, stands as a testament to the region's vibrant past and architectural grandeur. Rising from a rocky outcrop overlooking the Freiberger Mulde valley, this impressive castle complex has evolved from a medieval fortress into a stunning Renaissance palace. Its history spans centuries, marked by noble ownership, strategic importance, and eventual transformation into a cultural landmark. The castle's origins trace back to 1185 when the Knights of Nuzzin were first recorded as owners of a castle on the site. In 1315, the Bishops of Meissen acquired the castle, holding it until 1436 when it was sold to Altzella Abbey. For over a century, the Knights of Nossen battled with the monks of Altzella over land boundaries, until they handed over their castle to the Bishops of Meissen in the early 14th century. Following the Reformation and the dissolution of Altzella Monastery in 1540, Elector Augustus initiated a significant reconstruction, transforming the castle into a Renaissance hunting lodge starting in 1554, utilizing materials from the demolished monastery. This period saw the construction of the west section, featuring three round towers reminiscent of Moritzburg Castle and the Hall of Giants, parts of which are still used for events. Throughout its history, Schloss Nossen served various purposes, including a hunting lodge, a residence for travelers to and from Dresden, and the administrative center of the Nossen office. Augustus the Strong, the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, also used Nossen as a stopover on his travels. For a short time, August's most famous mistress, Countess Cosel, was also imprisoned here in December 1716 for four weeks, before being transferred to Stolpen. Later Saxon rulers, however, gave the castle a wide berth, as it no longer seemed representative enough to them. In 1630, Nossen Castle became the seat of the district governor and was primarily used for administrative purposes until the 19th century. It housed the rent office and the judicial office with a court and prisons. From the 19th century onward, it was used as a branch of Waldheim Prison, as a municipal museum of local history, and as living space. Nossen's office was disbanded in 1945. In 1993, the Free State of Saxony took over the castle and merged it with Altzella Monastery to form an administrative unit. Today, Schloss Nossen welcomes visitors to explore its rich history and architectural beauty. The castle features permanent and special exhibitions that showcase the city's eventful past and the history of Saxony's nobility, particularly the families of Schoenberg and Friesen. The Hall of Giants, with its imposing architecture, hosts various events and exhibitions throughout the year.
