Discover more about Burg Stolzenberg

Burg Stolzenberg, a ruined hilltop castle, stands proudly above the town of Bad Soden-Salmünster, its silhouette a constant reminder of the region's rich and storied past. The castle's origins trace back to the 13th century, when it was constructed by the Abbey of Fulda to safeguard the Kinzig valley and its valuable salt deposits. The strategic location provided a commanding view of the surrounding lands, allowing for early detection of potential threats and ensuring the security of the vital trade route. In its early years, Burg Stolzenberg was likely occupied by Burgmannen, professional soldiers of lower nobility who were granted portions of the castle as fiefdoms by the Abbot of Fulda. These men were responsible for defending the castle and the Abbey's holdings against enemies. In 1296, the Abbot of Fulda received town rights for the settlement of Soden from King Adolf of Nassau. It was even considered to name the new town 'Stolzenthal' after the castle, but this name never caught on. Later, the castle became the ancestral seat of the influential House of Hutten, a noble family that played a significant role in the region's history. The Hutten family's connection to Burg Stolzenberg began in the late 13th century, and by the 15th century, they had become deeply entrenched in the area's political and economic landscape. Frowin von Hutten, a court official from Mainz, owned the Burg Stolzenberg. In 1447, Ludwig von Hutten was knighted and received parts of the Soden salt springs and the castle. The castle's strategic importance gradually diminished as the Hutten family's power and influence grew. In 1536, Lukas von Hutten and his wife Apollonia von Frankenstein built a palace below the castle, which was expanded in 1594. With the relocation to the palace, the castle lost its importance. It is believed that the castle was destroyed in 1522 due to the proximity of the Mainz court official to Franz von Sickingen. Over the centuries, Burg Stolzenberg fell into disrepair, and much of its structure was lost to the ravages of time and neglect. However, the imposing bergfried, or main tower, remained standing, a testament to the castle's original strength and grandeur. In the 1970s, the tower was renovated and made accessible to the public again. Today, Burg Stolzenberg is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into the region's medieval past, while the observation tower provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can explore the remnants of the castle walls, imagine the bustling life that once filled its courtyards, and learn about the history of the Hutten family and their impact on the region. The castle is also the namesake and highlight of the Spessartfährte "Stolzenberger Ritterblick". This premium circular hiking trail, certified with the German Hiking Seal, surprises with a constant change of forest and meadow paths and amazing views of the Salz- und Kinzigtal over a distance of around seven kilometers.
