Henneburg Castle: A Ruin with a View

Henneburg Castle, locally known as the Henneburg, stands majestically on a hill overlooking the town of Stadtprozelten, Bavaria, on the right bank of the Main River. Its origins trace back to around 1127, when Timo de Bratselde is believed to have established a predecessor to the castle. The Schenken von Klingenberg family further solidified its presence around 1200, constructing it as a crucial border fortification. In the mid-13th century, the descendants of Conradus Colbo Schenk von Schüpf, who also founded Kollenburg Castle, donated it to the Teutonic Order. She then gifted it back to the Teutonic Order the following year. The Teutonic Order placed the castle under the Diocese of Mainz's control in 1333. Over the next 150 years, the Order undertook significant reconstruction efforts, imbuing the castle with its present Gothic style. In 1483, a pivotal exchange occurred between the Teutonic Order and the Mainz Diocese, granting the Diocese full ownership of the castle. It was during this time that the castle acquired the name Henneburg, after Count Georg von Henneberg, the last Commander of the Order stationed there. Despite extensive repairs in 1493, the castle gradually fell into disrepair. While it escaped significant damage during various wars, a thunderstorm did inflict some harm. With only a small garrison and sections left unused, the castle slowly decayed, and by 1704, it was already described as a ruin. The first efforts to preserve the ruin from complete destruction began in 1840. Unfortunately, disaster struck in 1927 when part of the palace collapsed due to fireworks. Another collapse occurred in 1978, resulting in three fatalities after a lightning strike. Consolidation efforts were undertaken in the 1980s to stabilize the remaining structure. Today, Henneburg Castle stands as a testament to its rich and turbulent past, freely open to visitors who wish to explore its grounds and imagine its former glory. The castle grounds are divided into distinct areas: the upper castle, comprising a fortification and main castle; the outdoor grounds, complete with a moat and rampart; and the defensive wall on the Main river side.
