Discover more about Nizza

Nizza, nestled on the Untermainkai in Frankfurt am Main, offers a surprising slice of the Mediterranean in the heart of Germany. This unique park, stretching for approximately one kilometer along the northern bank of the Main River, connects the Untermainbrücke and Friedensbrücke, creating a picturesque promenade with a distinct Riviera-like atmosphere. Originally, the area that is now Nizza was a river island. In 1858, during the construction of the Frankfurt Harbour Railway, the arm of the river was filled, connecting it to the mainland. City gardener Sebastian Rinz envisioned the Wallanlagen, Frankfurt's first green spaces, extending to the Main, culminating in a small public park by the river. While his initial ideas weren't immediately realized, a restaurant called “Mainlust” opened in 1832, its garden terrace adorned with sycamores becoming a popular attraction. The park's transformation into its current Mediterranean-themed design occurred around 1875, led by Andreas Weber, Sebastian Rinz's grandson. Weber introduced exotic plants to the Main, giving the area its name, Nizza, after the city of Nice on the French Riviera. The high quay wall, constructed of red sandstone, provides shelter from the wind, contributing to the park's unique microclimate. Nizza's favorable southern exposure, combined with the heat-retaining properties of the river and the sunlight reflecting off the water, creates a microclimate that allows Mediterranean plants to thrive. This 4.42-hectare site is one of the largest publicly accessible gardens of southern European plants north of the Alps. Visitors can wander among palms, fig trees, lemon trees, and other southern European flora, experiencing a touch of the Mediterranean. Initially, the plants required winter housing in greenhouses. However, a redesign in 2000-2005, overseen by Rainer Gesell-Schulte, introduced frost-resistant Mediterranean varieties, enabling the plants to remain outdoors year-round. Gesell-Schulte drew inspiration from the flora of the Italian Riviera, importing plants from France, the Netherlands, and the United States, many sourced from the Palmengarten, Frankfurt's renowned botanical garden. Today, Nizza is more than just a garden; it's a vibrant public space. The Main-Nizza restaurant offers dining with a view, while a water playground at the eastern end, near the Untermainbrücke, provides entertainment for children. The park also features a massive copper sundial, one of the largest in the world, near the Grindbrunnen Pavilion. Nizza is an important link between Frankfurt's tourist attractions, connecting the Wallanlagen park to the Museumsufer, a cluster of museums along the riverbank. The Jewish Museum Frankfurt, the Oper Frankfurt opera house, and the Schauspiel Frankfurt theatre are also nearby. Nizza offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Visitors can stroll along the promenade, relax on the lawns, or simply enjoy the views of the Main River and the Frankfurt skyline. The park is particularly beautiful in the spring and summer when the plants are in full bloom, but it also offers a unique charm in the winter, with the frost-resistant plants wrapped up for protection. Whether you're a nature lover, a history enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful place to relax, Nizza offers a unique and memorable experience in the heart of Frankfurt. Its Mediterranean flair, combined with its historical significance and convenient location, makes it a must-visit destination for any traveler.
