Pfalzgrafenstein Castle: The Stone Ship of the Rhine
Explore Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, a unique medieval toll castle on a Rhine River island near Kaub, offering a glimpse into history and stunning views of the Rhine Gorge.
Rising dramatically from a small island in the middle of the Rhine River near Kaub, Pfalzgrafenstein Castle, also known as 'the Pfalz,' is a former toll collection point unlike any other. Built in the 14th century, this unique structure never served as a residence but rather as a strategic stronghold to control river traffic and extract tolls. Its distinctive pentagonal tower and formidable walls have withstood sieges, wars, and the relentless forces of nature, earning it the nickname 'the Stone Ship.' Today, visitors can explore this remarkably preserved medieval castle, accessible only by ferry, and step back in time to experience the world of toll collectors and traders of centuries past. The castle offers a glimpse into the past, with no modern amenities such as electricity or lavatories, providing a truly authentic experience. The island offers stunning views of the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it a must-see destination for history buffs and sightseers alike.
