Rötteln Castle: A Window into Medieval History

Rötteln Castle, or Burg Rötteln, rises dramatically above the town of Lörrach, a sentinel overlooking the Wiese valley and a tangible link to the region's rich past. Its strategic location, near the borders of France and Switzerland, underscores its historical significance as a defensive stronghold and a center of power. The castle's story begins in the 11th century, with the first documented mention of a Lord of Rötteln in 1102. The castle itself is first mentioned in 1259. Over the centuries, it evolved from a modest fortification into a formidable complex, witnessing periods of prosperity, conflict, and ultimately, destruction. The Lords of Rötteln held sway over the region for generations, their influence extending into religious and political spheres. Three of the Lords of Rötteln even became Prince-Bishops of Basel, demonstrating their considerable power. In 1316, the castle passed to the Margraves of Hachberg-Sausenberg, marking a significant step in the formation of the Markgräflerland. The castle endured sieges, including one by the people of Basel in 1332, and suffered damage from the Basel earthquake of 1356. The Margraves of Baden inherited the castle in 1503, further cementing its importance in regional power dynamics. The 15th century marked Rötteln Castle's golden age under Rudolf IV, who drew inspiration from the Burgundian court to enhance the castle's splendor. Impoverished after the war, locals scavenged the ruins for building stone. However, in 1884, the Black Forest Society of Baden began surveying the ruins to preserve them. Since 1926, the Röttelnbund e.V. club has been dedicated to the castle's upkeep, restoring it to its post-1678 condition. Today, Rötteln Castle is the third-largest castle ruin in Baden-Württemberg, a testament to its former might. Visitors can explore the extensive grounds, divided into the outer bailey and upper castle. The outer bailey, once the site of workshops and service buildings, now houses a beer garden and café, offering refreshments with a view. A drawbridge leads to the upper castle, the oldest part of the complex, where the imposing keep stands tall.
