Discover more about Hedwigsturm

Rising proudly from the Zinhainer Höhe in Bad Marienberg, the Hedwigsturm beckons visitors with the promise of breathtaking panoramic views across the Westerwald. This 18-meter observation tower, an iconic landmark, stands as a testament to both natural beauty and local initiative. The tower's origins trace back to the Westerwaldverein, a local association dedicated to preserving and promoting the region's cultural and natural heritage. Recognizing the potential for a scenic overlook, the association proposed the construction of a tower that would showcase the Westerwald's rolling hills and verdant landscapes. The tower was named in honor of Hedwig Weber, a generous patron of the Westerwaldverein, whose support helped bring the vision to life. The Hedwigsturm's architectural design is striking and unique. Its open steel construction evokes the image of a hexagonal basalt column, a nod to the region's geological history. The Westerwald is known for its basalt formations, remnants of ancient volcanic activity. The tower's design pays homage to this natural heritage, creating a visual connection between the structure and its surroundings. Adding to the tower's allure is the story of its staircase. The steel spiral staircase, which forms the core of the Hedwigsturm, has a rather unusual past. It was reportedly used only once before finding its home in Bad Marienberg: to allow former German Chancellor Angela Merkel to ascend during a visit to a company in Marburg. This quirky detail adds a touch of historical intrigue to the tower's already captivating presence. Located within the Bad Marienberg Wildpark, the Hedwigsturm is easily accessible to visitors. The Wildpark itself is a popular destination, offering a chance to observe a variety of animals in a natural setting. From the town center, well-marked paths lead through the park to the tower, making it a pleasant walk for all ages and abilities. The Wildpark is free to enter. As you ascend the Hedwigsturm, anticipation builds with each step. The climb is not strenuous, and the reward at the top is well worth the effort. The viewing platform offers an unobstructed 360-degree panorama of the Westerwald. Rolling hills stretch out in every direction, dotted with forests, meadows, and charming villages. On a clear day, the views extend far into the distance, providing a sense of the vastness and beauty of the region. The Hedwigsturm is more than just a scenic viewpoint; it's a place to connect with nature, appreciate local history, and enjoy a moment of peace and tranquility. Whether you're a seasoned hiker, a nature lover, or simply seeking a memorable experience, the Hedwigsturm is sure to leave a lasting impression. Beyond the tower itself, the surrounding area offers a wealth of opportunities for exploration and recreation. The Bad Marienberg Wildpark is home to a diverse range of animals, including wild boars, deer, lynx, and various bird species. A network of walking trails winds through the park, allowing visitors to observe the animals in their natural habitat. The park also features a petting zoo, where children can interact with friendly farm animals. For those interested in geology and natural history, the nearby Basaltpark is a must-see. This unique park showcases the region's basalt formations, providing insights into the area's volcanic past. Walking trails lead through the park, allowing visitors to explore the basalt landscape and learn about the geological processes that shaped the Westerwald. Bad Marienberg itself is a charming town with a rich history and a welcoming atmosphere. The town center features a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes, offering a chance to relax and soak up the local culture. The town is also home to several historical landmarks, including the St. Marien Church and the Haus Marienberg, a former monastery. The Hedwigsturm and its surroundings offer a diverse range of experiences, making it an ideal destination for a day trip or a longer stay. Whether you're seeking outdoor adventure, cultural immersion, or simply a chance to relax and unwind, Bad Marienberg and the Hedwigsturm are sure to delight.
