Explore the Historic Charm of Katschhof
Discover Aachen's playful side at the Puppenbrunnen, an interactive fountain in the heart of the city where art, history, and imagination intertwine on Krämerstraße.
The Puppenbrunnen, or Doll Fountain, is a whimsical and beloved landmark in the heart of Aachen's historic city center. Created by sculptor Bonifatius Stirnberg in 1975, this interactive fountain features a collection of bronze figures and masks with movable parts, inviting visitors of all ages to rearrange and reimagine the characters. Each figure represents an aspect of Aachen's identity, from its equestrian heritage (CHIO Aachen horse show) to its academic prowess (represented by a professor) and its spirited carnival traditions. Located on Krämerstraße, between the Aachen Cathedral and the City Hall, the Puppenbrunnen is more than just a fountain; it's a symbol of Aachen's playful spirit and a popular spot for locals and tourists alike to gather, create, and connect with the city's rich cultural tapestry. The fountain's design encourages interaction, making it a memorable and engaging experience for everyone.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
The Puppenbrunnen is centrally located in Aachen's Altstadt (old town) on Krämerstraße, a pedestrian zone between the Aachen Cathedral and the Rathaus (City Hall). From either landmark, simply walk along Krämerstraße; the fountain is easily visible and accessible. From the Markt (main market square), walk east towards the Rathaus; Krämerstraße begins just past the City Hall. The fountain is free to access and open at all times.
Public Transport
If arriving by public transport to Aachen Hauptbahnhof (main train station), take a bus to the 'Aachen, Alter Posthof' stop. Several bus lines serve this stop, including lines 33, 46, and 51. From Alter Posthof, walk north along Büchel street, then turn right onto Krämerstraße. The Puppenbrunnen will be on your left in about 200 meters. A single bus fare within Aachen typically costs €2.80. Alternatively, from the Elisenbrunnen bus stop, walk south along Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz, turn left onto Kapuzinergraben, then right onto Krämerstraße. The Puppenbrunnen will be on your right.
Taxi/Ride-Share
Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available in Aachen. Simply request a ride to Krämerstraße 27, 52062 Aachen. Be aware that Krämerstraße is a pedestrian zone, so the driver will likely drop you off at the closest accessible point, such as near the Markt or on Büchel. From there, it's a short walk to the fountain. A taxi ride from Aachen Hauptbahnhof to the city center typically costs between €9-€11.
Driving
Driving directly to the Puppenbrunnen is not possible due to its location within a pedestrian zone. The closest parking garage is 'Parkhaus am Dom' (Jesuitenstraße), which is a 3-minute walk to the fountain. Other nearby parking options include 'APAG underground car park on Couvenstraße'. Parking fees at Parkhaus am Dom are approximately €2.50 per hour. Consider using Aachen's Park+Ride system, parking at a designated lot outside the city center and taking a bus to the Altstadt. This can be a more economical and less stressful option, especially during peak tourist season.
Use Puppenbrunnen as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
