Car
If you are driving from Zugspitze, start by heading south on B2. Follow the B2 for approximately 15 kilometers until you reach the junction for Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Stay on B2 and take the exit toward Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Continue on this road until you reach the town center, where you will follow the signs to Burgruine Werdenfels. The castle is located at Ruine Werdenfels 1, 82467 Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There is a small parking area near the entrance, but be aware that parking may incur a fee of around €3 for 3 hours.
Public Transportation
From Zugspitze, take the Zugspitzbahn train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The train ride takes about 45 minutes. Upon arriving at Garmisch-Partenkirchen station, exit the station and take bus number 2 (direction: Burgrain) from the bus stop near the station. The bus ride should take about 15 minutes. Get off at the 'Burgrain' stop, and from there, it’s a 15-minute walk up to Burgruine Werdenfels. Follow the signs for Burgruine Werdenfels, and you will reach the castle ruins, which is free to enter.
Hiking
For those who enjoy hiking, you can start at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From the town center, follow the hiking trail signs toward Burgruine Werdenfels. The hike is approximately 4 kilometers and takes around 1 hour. The trail is well-marked and offers beautiful views of the surrounding Alps. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes and carry water.
