Discover more about O'Hara's Battery

O'Hara's Battery, located at the highest point on the Rock of Gibraltar, offers visitors a unique blend of history and breathtaking scenery. Standing at an elevation of 1,383 feet (421 meters) near the southern end of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, this historic artillery battery provides panoramic views of the Strait of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea, and the North African coast. Originally the site of an unsuccessful watchtower attempt by General Charles O'Hara in the late 18th century, the battery was constructed in 1890 as part of Gibraltar's coastal defense system. O'Hara believed a tower at this height would allow surveillance of the enemy at Cadiz Harbour, some 60 miles away. The tower, later nicknamed O'Hara's Folly, was eventually demolished. The battery initially housed a 6-inch breech-loading gun, which was replaced in 1901 by a 9.2-inch Mark X BL gun capable of striking targets 16 miles away. The battery played a defensive role during both World War I and World War II. The gun was last fired during training exercises in 1976. Today, O'Hara's Battery has been refurbished and opened to the public in May 2010. Visitors can explore the restored gun installation, underground chambers, and exhibits detailing the battery's history and significance. The site is accessible via the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
