Discover more about Mediterranean Steps

The Mediterranean Steps is Gibraltar's most spectacular walking trail. Carved into the Rock of Gibraltar, this path is more than just a hike; it's a journey through history and nature. Originally constructed in the 18th century by the British military, the steps served as a crucial communication and access route to various defense posts. Today, hikers can follow in the footsteps of soldiers while enjoying panoramic views. The trail begins at Jews' Gate, near the Pillars of Hercules, at approximately 180 meters above sea level. From there, the path zigzags along the Rock's eastern side, ascending to over 425 meters at O'Hara's Battery, the highest point. The 1.8-kilometer hike is a demanding climb, with steep sections that require stamina and a good head for heights. Along the way, hikers will encounter diverse flora and fauna, including the possibility of spotting Barbary macaques, the famous Gibraltar monkeys. As you ascend, take time to explore the historical landmarks along the route. These include Goat's Hair Twin Caves, once sea caves when the sea level was much higher, and a derelict pre-war tunnel and pumping station. The steps also pass by World War II fortifications, offering a glimpse into Gibraltar's strategic military past. The final stretch involves a strenuous climb to the summit, where you'll be rewarded with stunning views from Lord Airey's Battery and O'Hara's Battery. From here, you can see the Spanish Costa del Sol, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Rif Mountains of Morocco.
