Constructed in the 1530s as part of a Franciscan friary, it stands as the first purpose-built church in Gibraltar. Following the British capture of Gibraltar in 1704, the chapel was given to the Church of England and renamed King's Chapel.Throughout its history, the chapel has endured significant events, including severe damage during the Great Siege of Gibraltar in the late 18th century and from an explosion in the harbor in 1951. Each time, it was carefully restored, reflecting its importance to the community. From 1844 to 1990, it served as the principal church for the British Army in Gibraltar and is currently used by all three branches of the British Armed Forces.Inside, visitors can explore the chapel's unique blend of architectural styles and historical artifacts. The walls hold memorials and colors of British regiments, and the remains of notable figures, including the wife of a Spanish governor and British governors, are interred within its walls.
