Discover more about World Heritage Monument to the Gorham's Cave Complex

Gorham's Cave Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016, is located on the eastern side of the Rock of Gibraltar. This remarkable site spans 28 hectares, from sea level to the top of the Rock, and comprises a cluster of four caves: Gorham's Cave, Vanguard Cave, Hyaena Cave, and Bennett's Cave. These caves offer exceptional insight into the lives of Neanderthals and early modern humans who inhabited the area for over 120,000 years. The caves provide a unique glimpse into Neanderthal life, showcasing their culture, traditions, and cognitive abilities. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of their diet, including birds and marine animals, and their capacity for abstract thought, demonstrated by a rock engraving found in Gorham's Cave. Gibraltar was one of the last known refuges for Neanderthals, with evidence suggesting their presence until around 32,000 years ago. The complex also contains evidence of early modern human occupation, indicating continuous habitation until approximately 1800 BCE. Visitors can explore the site through guided tours, which provide an in-depth look at the archaeological significance of the caves. A viewing platform at Europa Advance Road offers panoramic views of the World Heritage Site, including the sea caves and the highest point of the Rock. Interpretation panels provide information on Neanderthals, the history of the Strait of Gibraltar, and the area's natural heritage. The Gibraltar Nature Reserve, which forms part of the buffer zone to the World Heritage site, represents over 40% of Gibraltar's territory.
