Getting There

  • Walking

    The Charles V Wall is located within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. From Casemates Square, head south along Main Street. Turn left onto Queensway Road and continue towards the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. Enter the gardens and follow the signs leading towards the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and Charles V Wall. The wall is approximately a 15-minute walk from the Botanic Gardens. Note that the walk involves some uphill sections.

  • Public Transport

    From the Gibraltar International Airport or the city center, take bus route 3 or 4 towards the city center. Get off at the 'Trafalgar Cemetery' bus stop on Main Street. From there, walk south along Main Street, then turn left onto Queensway Road and continue towards the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. Enter the gardens and follow the signs leading towards the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and Charles V Wall. Bus fare is approximately £1.50 for a single journey.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are readily available throughout Gibraltar, including at the airport, border, and Casemates Square. A taxi from the Gibraltar International Airport to the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, near the Charles V Wall, will cost approximately £10-£15. From there, follow the walking directions through the gardens to reach the wall.

The Charles V Wall, originally called Muralla de San Benito (St. Benedict's Wall), is a historic fortification in Gibraltar built in 1540 and strengthened in 1552. It was commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V to bolster Gibraltar's defenses against Barbary pirates and other naval threats. The wall stretches from South Bastion, once at the water's edge, to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar.Designed by Italian engineer Giovanni Battista Calvi, the wall originally ran in a straight line from the coast before traversing north-south along a cliff and then zigzagging to the Rock's crest. Later, Philip II commissioned further improvements, altering the design.Today, the Charles V Wall stands as a testament to Gibraltar's military history and offers visitors a unique experience. The upper section has been restored, allowing people to walk along it from the base to the summit, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding landscapes. The wall is accessible 24 hours a day. The wall forms a large staircase. Be prepared for a climb as the ascent to the top involves 660 steep steps. Resting points and benches are available along the way.Located within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, a visit to the Charles V Wall can be combined with exploring other nearby attractions such as the Moorish Castle and the Great Siege Tunnels.
