Discover more about Grand Battery

Grand Battery, a significant artillery battery in Gibraltar, has been a crucial part of the territory's defenses since the Moorish occupation in the early 14th century. Originally known as Muralla de San Bernando, the battery was adapted to mount cannons facing the isthmus, replacing Moorish archery towers with bastions.Throughout the centuries, Grand Battery has undergone numerous improvements and expansions. In 1627, it was reinforced following a report by Don Luis Bravo de Acuña. By the 18th century, it was armed with 18-pounder cannons. The British further enhanced the battery after capturing Gibraltar in 1704, and it played a vital role in subsequent sieges. In 2019, restoration work removed a WWII blast wall, revealing 18th-century fire steps.Today, Grand Battery stands as a testament to Gibraltar's military heritage. Visitors can explore the well-preserved site, imagine the echoes of the past, and enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and the Rock of Gibraltar. Informative plaques detail the battery's historical significance, offering insights into the lives of the soldiers who once manned its fortifications.
