Discover more about Holy Trinity Cathedral Anglican

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, often called Gibraltar Cathedral, is located in Cathedral Square and serves as the cathedral for the Church of England Diocese in Europe. It should not be confused with the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned, Gibraltar's Roman Catholic cathedral. Originally built as a church to serve Gibraltar's Anglican civilian population, construction began in 1825 and was completed in 1832. The architect is unknown, but Colonel Pilkington of the Royal Engineers oversaw the work. During construction, the building was temporarily used as an emergency hospital during a yellow fever epidemic. The church was consecrated in 1838, and in 1842 it was raised to cathedral status upon the creation of the Diocese of Gibraltar. The cathedral's design showcases Moorish Revival architecture, characterized by its prominent horseshoe arches. This style draws inspiration from Moorish architecture, a fitting tribute to Gibraltar's period under Moorish control. The cathedral suffered no significant damage during World War II. Post-war, funds were raised to construct new vestries and a second chapel dedicated to St. George in memory of those who died in the Mediterranean during the war. A stone from Coventry Cathedral, which was ruined in the Blitz, is incorporated into the wall behind the baptismal font. In 1951, an explosion caused substantial damage, but repairs were made, and the cathedral was back in use by Christmas of that year. Today, the Holy Trinity Cathedral stands as a testament to Gibraltar's history and a vibrant center for the Anglican community. Visitors are welcome to attend services or explore the cathedral's architecture and historical features.
