Getting There

  • Walking

    From the main entrance of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, follow the marked trails towards St Michael's Cave. Continue past the main St Michael's Cave entrance, and follow signs for the Lower St Michael's Cave. The tour starting point is within walking distance, but involves some uphill and downhill sections. Ensure you have a valid Nature Reserve ticket to access the area. Allow approximately 20-30 minutes walking time from the main entrance of the reserve.

  • Public Transport

    Take bus routes 2, 3, or 4 from the city center towards the Upper Rock. Alight at the 'Mount Alvernia Terminus' or 'Europa Rd - Garrison Gym' bus stop. From either bus stop, follow the walking directions to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve entrance and then to Lower St Michael's Cave. Bus fare is approximately £1.60 - £1.80 per single journey. Note that a Nature Reserve ticket is also required.

  • Taxi

    Take a taxi from anywhere in Gibraltar to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve entrance. Ask the driver to drop you off as close as possible to the St Michael's Cave entrance. From there, follow the walking directions to the Lower St Michael's Cave. A taxi fare from the city center to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve will cost approximately £10-£15. Remember to factor in the cost of the Nature Reserve ticket.

Shimmering in the soft light, the formations create an otherworldly ambiance, with some resembling a pulpit, chancel, and organ pipes. The highlight is the 37-meter-long underground lake, holding an estimated 200,000 liters of crystal-clear water.This cave has been preserved in its original natural state, with only minimal additions of ropes and lighting to ensure visitor safety. Exploring the Lower St Michael's Cave involves some scrambling and minor climbing, adding to the sense of adventure. Knowledgeable guides lead small groups, sharing insights into the cave's geology, history, and unique features.Visiting Lower St Michael's Cave requires a pre-booked guided tour.
