    Getting There

    Walking

    From Casemates Square, walk south along Main Street, then follow Europa Road. Continue past the Rock Hotel and turn onto Engineer Road. Follow signs to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and the Pillars of Hercules, where you'll find the ticket office. The Mediterranean Steps trailhead is a short walk from there. Expect a 40-minute walk from Casemates Square to the entrance.

    Public Transport

    From the Gibraltar International Airport or the city center, take bus route 3 towards Europa Point. Get off at the Alameda Gardens stop, which is a 10-15 minute walk to the entrance of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. From there, follow the walking directions to the Mediterranean Steps trailhead. A single bus fare costs approximately £2.20.

    Taxi

    Taxis are readily available at the Gibraltar International Airport, the border with Spain, and in Casemates Square. A taxi ride from the airport or city center to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve entrance will cost approximately £10-£15. Confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey.

    The Mediterranean Steps is a unique hiking trail in Gibraltar, offering a blend of historical significance, natural beauty, and physical challenge. Originally created in the 18th century by the British military, the steps served as a crucial communication and access route to various defense posts on the southern end of the Rock. Today, they provide a thrilling pedestrian route to Lord Airey's Battery, near the summit, rewarding hikers with stunning panoramic views.The trail begins at Jews' Gate, within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, and ascends from approximately 180 meters above sea level. As you climb, you'll traverse a path that winds along the eastern side of the Rock, presenting dramatic cliffside scenery and diverse Mediterranean vegetation. Along the way, you'll encounter historical remnants, including Goat's Hair Twin Caves, once sea caves inhabited by prehistoric people, and World War II fortifications.The ascent can be strenuous, with steep sections and rocky terrain, but the breathtaking vistas make it worthwhile. From the summit, you can see the Strait of Gibraltar, Windmill Hill, Europa Point, the Great Sand Dune, and the coastlines of Spain and North Africa. The trail culminates near O'Hara's Battery and Lord Airey's Battery, where two 9.2-inch guns stand as a testament to Gibraltar's military history.After reaching the top, hikers can explore other attractions within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, such as St. Michael's Cave and the Apes' Den, before descending. While challenging, the Mediterranean Steps offer an unforgettable experience, combining a good workout with a journey through history and nature.
