Discover more about Southport Gates

The Southport Gates are a compelling historical site in Gibraltar, comprised of three distinct gates built into the Charles V Wall. This fortification was erected in the 16th century to protect the city's southern boundary. The gates are located next to the Trafalgar Cemetery, at the base of Trafalgar Hill, with the South Bastion to the west and Flat Bastion to the east. The oldest of the three, the Southport Gate (also known as the Africa Gate), dates back to 1552. It was built by Italian engineer Giovanni Battista Calvi and bears the Royal Arms of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, and the coat of arms of Gibraltar. The central gate, known as the "New" Southport Gate, was added in 1883 during Queen Victoria's reign to ease traffic flow. It features the coat of arms of the governor at the time, the arms of Gibraltar, and the Royal Arms of Queen Victoria. The widest of the three, the Referendum Gate, was constructed in 1967 to commemorate Gibraltar's first sovereignty referendum, in which Gibraltarians voted to remain under British rule.Collectively, the Southport Gates embody Gibraltar's strategic importance and turbulent past. They serve as a reminder of the city's defenses against sieges, wars, and piracy. Today, the gates stand as a testament to Gibraltar's enduring spirit and rich history, offering visitors a tangible link to the past.
