Discover more about Trafalgar Cemetery

Trafalgar Cemetery, located just outside the old city walls of Gibraltar, offers a tranquil and reflective experience steeped in history. Originally known as Southport Ditch Cemetery, it was consecrated in 1798, predating the famed Battle of Trafalgar by seven years. The cemetery's name is somewhat misleading, as only a few casualties from the 1805 battle are interred here; most of the fallen were buried at sea.Instead, the cemetery primarily holds the remains of soldiers and sailors who died from wounds or disease in Gibraltar between 1798 and 1814. This includes victims of yellow fever epidemics and those who perished in other naval engagements of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Among those buried here are Lieutenant William Forster of HMS Colossus and Captain Thomas Norman of the Royal Marine Corps.Walking through the cemetery, visitors will find well-maintained paths, lush greenery, and informational signs detailing the site's history. In 1932, gravestones from the St. Jago's Cemetery were moved to the east wall of Trafalgar Cemetery, adding to the historical tapestry. The oldest gravestone dates back to 1738. Today, the cemetery serves as a peaceful memorial and a reminder of Gibraltar's strategic importance throughout history. A commemorative ceremony is held annually on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
