    Discover more about Wellington Front

Wellington Front is a significant historical site in Gibraltar, serving as a reminder of the territory's layered past and strategic importance. Constructed in 1840, it stands on the foundation of earlier city walls dating back to the Moorish period and subsequently modified by the Spanish and British. The Front forms part of the Line Wall Curtain, a defensive fortification. The original Moorish wall had inherent weaknesses, particularly its vulnerability to bombardment. In the 1840s, these vulnerabilities were addressed with the construction of Wellington Front, named after the Duke of Wellington, and Prince Albert's Front. This project aimed to straighten and reinforce the Line Wall Curtain. The construction of Wellington Front was one of the last fortifications in Gibraltar to be built using convict labor. Over 900 convicts were involved, housed on a prison ship named HMS Owen Glendower.Today, Wellington Front serves as a public promenade and a venue for various events. Visitors can explore the area on foot, enjoying views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding architecture.
