Discover more about World Heritage Monument to the Gorham's Cave Complex

The Gorham's Cave Complex, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, is a cluster of sea-level caves on the eastern side of the Rock of Gibraltar. This location provides exceptional testimony to the occupation, cultural traditions, and material culture of Neanderthals and early modern humans. Archaeological deposits within the caves offer evidence of Neanderthal habitation for over 100,000 years, up to around 32,000 years ago, marking it as one of the last known Neanderthal refuges in Europe. The complex consists of four caves: Gorham's Cave, Vanguard Cave, Hyaena Cave, and Bennett's Cave. Excavations have revealed artifacts, tools, and animal remains, providing insights into Neanderthal life, diet, and cognitive abilities. Discoveries include evidence of hunting birds and marine animals, the use of feathers for ornamentation, and abstract rock engravings, challenging previous assumptions about Neanderthal intelligence. The caves also contain evidence of early modern human occupation, suggesting continuous habitation until approximately 1800 BCE. Visitors can explore the area via a viewing platform that offers panoramic views of the caves and the surrounding landscape. Interpretation panels provide information about the site's history, significance, and the ongoing research. Guided tours to the entrance of Gorham's Cave are available, led by experts from the Gibraltar National Museum, but must be pre-booked due to limited availability and the fragility of the site. The Mediterranean Steps, a nature trail within the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, also offers unique perspectives of the area, showcasing the environment that has existed since Neanderthal times.
