The Mediterranean Steps, carved into Gibraltar's eastern cliffs, present a demanding but unforgettable hiking experience. Originally constructed by the British military in the 18th century to access strategic defense posts, these steps now serve as a thrilling nature trail that ascends to the Rock's summit. The ascent begins at Jews' Gate, within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, and immediately immerses hikers in the dramatic landscape. As you climb, the path reveals stunning vistas of the Strait of Gibraltar, the Mediterranean Sea, and the distant Costa del Sol. The route passes historical landmarks, including Goat's Hair Twin Caves, which show evidence of prehistoric human habitation, and World War II fortifications, offering glimpses into Gibraltar's layered past. The trail is steep and rugged, with sections of exposed cliffside, making it unsuitable for those with a fear of heights or limited physical fitness.
