Discover more about Devil's Gap Battery

Devil's Gap Battery, known as Punta del Diablo by the Spanish, is a historic coastal battery in Gibraltar, offering panoramic views of the Bay of Gibraltar from its location near the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Situated 130 meters (430 ft) above sea level, the battery's history dates back to the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), during which it served as a strategic position with at least one mortar. In the late 19th century, the battery was upgraded with two RML 9-inch 12-ton guns in 1881, though these were later removed in 1900. By 1902, two BL 6-inch Mk VII naval guns were installed, enhancing its defensive capabilities. During World War I, one of these guns famously sank a German submarine in 1917. The battery remained manned during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. While ceasing its close defense examination role in 1954, the 6-inch guns remain in place. Today, Devil's Gap Battery is maintained by volunteers on behalf of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust and is a Class A listed building. Visitors can explore the well-preserved site, imagine its historical significance, and enjoy the scenic views. Recent plans aim to enhance the visitor experience with improved facilities and interpretive displays.
