Discover more about Holy Trinity Cathedral Anglican

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, located in Cathedral Square, is the primary Anglican church in Gibraltar and the cathedral for the Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe. Its story began in the early 19th century when John Pitt, the Earl of Chatham and Governor of Gibraltar, advocated for a dedicated church for the civilian Anglican population, as the King's Chapel was mainly for military personnel. Construction started in 1825, and the church was completed in 1832.The cathedral's architecture is a striking example of Moorish Revival style, drawing inspiration from the region's Moorish heritage. The design features prominent horseshoe arches, a nod to the Moorish control of Gibraltar for over seven centuries. While the original plans were drafted around 1740 by Peter Harrison, Colonel Pilkington of the Royal Engineers oversaw the construction, modifying the design to incorporate Moorish elements. The church was consecrated in 1838 and raised to cathedral status in 1842, becoming the center for Anglicans in Europe (excluding the British Isles). The Diocese of Gibraltar once covered a vast area, stretching from Portugal to the Caspian Sea.Inside the cathedral, a stone from Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed during the Blitz, is embedded in the wall behind the baptismal font. This stone serves as a poignant reminder of resilience and reconciliation. The cathedral suffered damage in 1951 when the RFA Bedenham exploded, leading to the creation of a new stained-glass window above the high altar using fragments of the original glass.
