The statue stands in front of the South Bastion, which was built in the mid-16th century as part of the Charles V Wall and later enhanced by the British.Unveiled on October 28, 2005, the statue commemorates the 200th anniversary of Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar. The memorial is crafted with metal sourced from HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship during the battle.
