Discover more about Mediterranean Steps

The Mediterranean Steps present a unique and challenging hiking experience on the Rock of Gibraltar. Originally built by the British military in the 18th century as a communication route to various defense posts , today they serve as a thrilling path for hikers seeking stunning views and a touch of history. The trail begins at Jews' Gate, located within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. From there, the path ascends along the eastern side of the Rock, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Spanish Costa del Sol, and the North African coastline. The route is steep and includes numerous steps, some sections requiring scrambling, making it a strenuous but rewarding climb. Along the way, hikers encounter remnants of military installations, including World War II fortifications, tunnels, and gun emplacements. The path passes Goat's Hair Twin Caves, which provide evidence of prehistoric human habitation and were once at sea level. The trail culminates near the summit at O'Hara's Battery, where two 9.2-inch guns stand. While the hike is demanding, the panoramic views and the blend of natural and historical elements make it a memorable experience. The best time to hike the Mediterranean Steps is during spring when the area is adorned with wildflowers, or in the late afternoon during the summer months for shade.
