Mediterranean Steps: A Stairway to History and Breathtaking Views
Hike Gibraltar's historic Mediterranean Steps for stunning views, military history, and a challenging natural trail to the Rock's summit.
The Mediterranean Steps is a challenging hiking trail in Gibraltar that ascends along the eastern side of the Rock, within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Originally constructed by the British military in the 18th century as a communication route between various defense posts , the steps now serve as a popular hiking trail offering stunning views and a glimpse into Gibraltar's military history. The path begins near Jew's Gate at the southern end of the reserve and zigzags upwards, reaching close to the summit near O'Hara's Battery. Along the way, hikers encounter various historical remnants, including World War II fortifications and old gun emplacements. The trail also passes Goat's Hair Twin Caves, which offer a glimpse into the area's prehistoric past. The hike is considered moderate to strenuous, with steep sections and uneven steps. However, the panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Spanish Costa del Sol, and the African coastline make the effort worthwhile. The area is particularly scenic in spring when wildflowers bloom. Hikers may also encounter Barbary macaques, Gibraltar's famous monkey population. While the steps were once deemed unsafe, renovations in 2007 have improved the trail's condition with sturdy rope handrails in particularly steep sections. Despite these improvements, hikers should still exercise caution and wear appropriate footwear.
