Discover more about North Bastion

North Bastion, historically known as Baluarte San Pablo (St. Paul's Bastion), is a significant fortification in Gibraltar, strategically positioned to defend the town from attacks originating from the Spanish mainland. Its origins trace back to the Giralda Tower, constructed in 1309, with the bastion evolving over centuries through Moorish, Spanish, and British enhancements. In the mid-16th century, King Philip II commissioned military engineer Giovan Giacomo Paleari Fratino to improve Gibraltar's defenses, transforming the Giralda Tower into a formidable bastion. The bastion played a crucial role during numerous sieges, including the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), withstanding intense bombardments and serving as a vital artillery platform. The British further strengthened the fortifications after seizing Gibraltar in 1704, adding cannons and integrating the bastion into the Grand Battery.Today, North Bastion is surrounded by reclaimed land, with Glacis Road and Smith Dorrien Avenue bordering its former glacis. The site now houses the Giralda Gardens and a pétanque club. Visitors can explore the bastion's well-preserved structure, admire the panoramic views of the Strait of Gibraltar, and learn about its rich military history through informative plaques. The Government of Gibraltar has plans to further develop the area as a tourist attraction, enhancing accessibility and historical interpretation.
