Getting There

Walking

From Casemates Square, walk south along Main Street. Turn left onto Line Wall Road, then left again onto Queensway Road. Continue walking for approximately 5 minutes. South Bastion will be on your right at 110 Queensway Road. The walk offers scenic views of the harbor.
Public Transport

From the Gibraltar Airport, take bus route 3 towards the city center. Alight at the bus stop on Line Wall Road, near the city center. From there, walk south along Line Wall Road, then turn left onto Queensway Road. South Bastion will be on your right, a short walk away. A single adult bus fare is £1.80.

South Bastion, located at the southern end of the Line Wall Curtain, is a significant historical landmark in Gibraltar, embodying the region's rich military heritage. The bastion was initially constructed around 1540 by Spanish military engineers and was called Baluarte de Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Bastion of Our Lady of the Rosary). It was later improved by the British.The South Bastion protected the western base of the Charles V Wall and defended the town from attacks from the Bay of Gibraltar. Giovanni Battista Calvi, a Milanese military engineer, designed the original defensive positions in 1557. The bastion's strategic position provided a line of fire along the coast and the South Front.Over the centuries, the bastion has been modified and strengthened. In 1757, Lord Tyrawley enhanced the southern face, and in 1870, it was reconstructed to accommodate heavy guns. Today, the South Bastion houses the Gibraltar College and features a statue of Horatio Nelson, commemorating his victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. Visitors can explore the historic corridors, enjoy panoramic views, and reflect on the layers of history that have shaped Gibraltar.
