4.4

King's Chapel, nestled in the heart of Gibraltar, stands as a testament to the territory's layered history. Originally constructed in the 1530s as part of a Franciscan friary, it holds the distinction of being the first purpose-built church in Gibraltar. Before its construction, existing churches were converted mosques. Following the British capture of Gibraltar in 1704, the chapel was handed over to the Church of England and renamed King's Chapel. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the changing fortunes of Gibraltar itself. The chapel suffered significant damage during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783) and again in 1951 when an ammunition ship exploded in the harbor. Each time, it was carefully restored, showcasing a blend of architectural styles. From 1844 to 1990, King's Chapel served as the principal church of the British Army in Gibraltar. Today, it is used by all three branches of the British Armed Forces and also hosts Roman Catholic services. Inside, visitors can find memorials to members of the British Armed Forces, as well as the tombs of several governors and their wives. The chapel also displays the colors of various British regiments. King's Chapel adjoins The Convent, the Governor of Gibraltar's residence, at the southern end of Main Street. Its location makes it easily accessible to visitors exploring Gibraltar's historic center. The chapel is open to the public on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM.
