Discover more about British War Memorial

Located in John Mackintosh Square, the British War Memorial serves as a solemn tribute to the lives lost during World War I. Sculpted by Jose Piquet Catoli of Barcelona, the monument was unveiled on September 27, 1923, by the Governor of Gibraltar, Sir Charles Monro. The memorial is constructed from Carrara marble and features intricate carvings and inscriptions. The inscription reads: 'To the Memory of all Officers and Seamen of the Gibraltar Straits Patrol Who Gave Their Lives for Their King and Empire in the Great War'. Adjacent to the memorial are two Russian guns captured during the Crimean War (1854–1856), presented to Gibraltar by the British Government in 1858 for its assistance during the conflict. The other two guns are located at the entrance to the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. John Mackintosh Square, where the memorial is located, has been the center of city life since the 14th century. Originally known as Plaza Mayor during the Spanish period, it was later called The Parade by the British in the 18th century, as it was used for military parades. In 1940, the square was officially named John Mackintosh Square in honor of John Mackintosh, a local philanthropist. Today, the square is a vibrant public space with gardens, cafes, and shops, offering a blend of historical reverence and contemporary life.
