Discover more about Holy Trinity Cathedral Anglican

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, located in Cathedral Square, is the primary Anglican church in Gibraltar. Often referred to as Gibraltar Cathedral, it distinguishes itself from the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned, which is the Roman Catholic cathedral. Constructed between 1825 and 1832, the cathedral showcases a striking Moorish Revival design, characterized by its prominent horseshoe arches, a style influenced by the region's Moorish past. The cathedral's origins trace back to the need for an Anglican place of worship for Gibraltar's civilian population, as the King's Chapel was primarily for military use. The Earl of Chatham, then Governor, facilitated the project by securing government funds through the sale of a derelict building. Colonel Pilkington of the Royal Engineers supervised the construction, incorporating Moorish architectural elements.Consecrated in 1838, the church was elevated to cathedral status in 1842, becoming the focal point for Anglicans across Europe, excluding the British Isles. Today, it serves as the mother church for the Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe. Throughout its history, the cathedral has served as a place of worship and a community hub, even functioning as a temporary hospital during a Yellow Fever epidemic. The cathedral suffered damage during the explosion of the RFA Bedenham in 1951, which lifted the roof and shattered the stained glass. The windows were reglazed, and the colored glass fragments were used to create a new stained glass window above the communion table. Inside, a stone from Coventry Cathedral, destroyed in the Blitz, is embedded in the wall behind the baptismal font.Visitors can explore the cathedral's architecture, learn about its history, and experience its serene atmosphere. The surrounding Cathedral Square offers a picturesque setting with shops and cafes. The cathedral is open to visitors Monday to Saturday, 11 am to 3 pm.
