Discover more about O'Hara's Battery

O'Hara's Battery, crowning the Rock of Gibraltar at 421 meters (1,383 feet) above sea level, is a historic artillery battery offering unparalleled views and a glimpse into Gibraltar's military past. Named after General Charles O'Hara, Governor of Gibraltar in the late 18th century, the site initially hosted a watchtower, humorously dubbed 'O'Hara's Folly' due to its limited visibility. Completed in 1890, the battery was equipped with heavy artillery to defend the Strait of Gibraltar. In 1901, a 9.2-inch Mark X BL gun was installed, capable of striking targets up to 29,000 yards (16 miles) away, theoretically reaching the African coast. The battery remained active through both World Wars, last firing its gun in training exercises in 1976. Today, O'Hara's Battery has been meticulously restored and opened to the public in May 2010. Visitors can explore the gun emplacements, underground chambers, and observation points, gaining insight into the battery's construction, armament, and strategic significance. The site offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the town below, providing a unique perspective on the landscape and a great photo opportunity. Interesting Fact: General O'Hara was quite the character! He was nicknamed 'Cock-of-the-Rock' and was known for his extravagant parties and flamboyant attire.
