Discover more about O'Hara's Battery

O'Hara's Battery, situated at the highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar, stands as a testament to the territory's enduring military significance. Completed in 1890, the battery is named after General Charles O'Hara, a former Governor of Gibraltar who recognized the strategic advantage of the location. The battery occupies the site of a former watchtower, which was known as O'Hara's Folly because its visibility was overestimated. Initially armed with a 6-inch breech-loading gun, O'Hara's Battery was upgraded in 1901 with a 9.2-inch Mark X BL gun capable of striking targets over 16 miles away. This formidable weapon played a key role in Gibraltar's coastal defense, remaining active through World War II and last fired in training exercises in 1976. Today, O'Hara's Battery has been meticulously restored and opened to the public. Visitors can explore the gun emplacements, underground ammunition magazines, and connecting tunnels, gaining insight into the battery's operation and the lives of the soldiers who served there. Interactive exhibits and displays further enhance the visitor experience. Beyond its military history, O'Hara's Battery offers unparalleled panoramic views. From this vantage point, visitors can see across the Strait of Gibraltar to North Africa, as well as enjoy sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding landscapes. O'Hara's Battery is accessible as part of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
