Discover more about Castle Steps

The Castle Steps, also known as Escaleras del Castillo, are a steep, narrow, winding staircase that offers a unique hiking experience in Gibraltar. Located on the iconic Rock of Gibraltar, the steps begin at the junction of Castle Street, Castle Ramp, Hospital Ramp, and New Passage, ascending to the area near Willis's Road, Calpe Road, and Tank Ramp. Along the route, the steps intersect with Castle Road, providing access to different parts of the upper town. These steps are not just a pathway but a historical route that has been traversed by soldiers and locals throughout history. As you climb, you're surrounded by natural beauty, with greenery and diverse wildlife accompanying your journey. The paths reveal historical landmarks, including remnants of ancient fortifications and watchtowers that tell the story of Gibraltar's strategic importance. The experience is enhanced by the fresh sea air and panoramic vistas that unfold at each turn, making it ideal for photography enthusiasts. At the junction with Castle Road was an unusual feature known as el Caño Real - or Main Drain - at one time an important feature of the Spanish era. Over the centuries its surface had been worn smooth - much to the delight of local children who soon adopted it as an exciting slide. Whether you're an avid hiker or a casual walker, the Castle Steps promise an unforgettable adventure filled with history, beauty, and a sense of accomplishment.
