Discover more about Gibraltar Botanic Gardens

The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, or La Alameda Gardens, provide a serene escape in the heart of Gibraltar. Established in 1816 by Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Don, the gardens were intended as a recreational area for soldiers and residents, offering respite from the Mediterranean heat. The gardens fell into disrepair in the 1970s but were restored in 1991, expanding their role to include education, research, and conservation. The gardens span approximately 6 hectares (15 acres) and feature a variety of plants from Mediterranean climatic zones around the world. Highlights include a collection of palm trees, cacti, and the oldest dragon tree in the gardens, estimated to be around 300 years old. The original layout, with interconnecting paths and terraced beds using local limestone, remains largely intact. Monuments and busts, such as the Eliott Memorial, add historical significance. Within the gardens, visitors can explore the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park, home to native and exotic animals. The park focuses on conservation and rescue efforts. The gardens also feature an open-air theatre that hosts cultural events. Guided tours are available by appointment, offering insights into the gardens' history and plant species. The Dell, an Italian-style garden designed by Guiseppe Codali, provides an intimate setting with lush greenery and a picturesque bridge.
