Getting there

Public Transport

From the Gibraltar Cruise Port or the land border with Spain, take Citibus routes 5 or 10 to the Boyd Street Terminus. From there, it's a short walk to the Gibraltar Cable Car base station, located off Red Sands Road, next to the Alameda Gardens. A single bus fare costs approximately £2.20. The bus journey from the frontier takes around 6 minutes.

Walking

From Gibraltar's city center, the Cable Car base station is approximately a 15-20 minute walk. Head south on Main Street, then turn onto Red Sands Road. The base station is located at the foot of the Rock, next to the Alameda Gardens. This is a straightforward, relatively flat walk.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available throughout Gibraltar. A taxi from the Gibraltar Airport or the city center to the Cable Car base station will cost approximately £5-£10, depending on traffic and the starting location. Ensure the taxi driver is aware of the Cable Car's location on Red Sands Road.

Overview

The Gibraltar Cable Car provides a swift and scenic journey to the Top of the Rock, 412 meters above sea level. Constructed in 1966, the cable car was initially built for military purposes but soon became a popular tourist attraction. The base station is located near the southern end of Main Street, next to the Alameda Gardens.The six-minute ride offers panoramic views of the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain, and Morocco. At the Top Station, visitors can explore various terraces, enjoy refreshments at the Top of the Rock Café, and browse the souvenir shop. The famous Barbary macaques, also known as apes, roam freely in the area, adding to the unique experience.The Top Station also provides access to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, where you can visit St. Michael's Cave, the Skywalk, the Great Siege Tunnels, and other historical and natural attractions. A multimedia tour, included with the cable car ticket, guides visitors around the top station terraces, offering insights into Gibraltar's history and landmarks. The cable car operates daily, with varying hours depending on the season.
