The Mediterranean Steps, carved into Gibraltar's eastern cliffs, offer a challenging yet rewarding hike through history and stunning scenery. Originally built by the British military in the 18th century, these steps provide access to former defense posts while treating hikers to panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Spanish coastline.

Walking
From Casemates Square in Gibraltar's city center, walk south along Main Street. Continue past the Alameda Gardens and through the Southport Gates. Follow Europa Road south for approximately 2 kilometers. Turn left onto Windmill Hill Road and walk uphill for about 10 minutes to reach the entrance to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve at Jews' Gate and the Pillars of Hercules, the starting point of the Mediterranean Steps. Note: A ticket to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve is required to access the Mediterranean Steps. As of July 2025, tickets cost £13 for adults.
Public Transport
From Market Square, walk for about 20 minutes from the cruise terminal to catch the Number 2 bus to the Garrison Gymnasium bus stop on Europa Road. From there, it's a 10-minute walk up Windmill Hill Road to the Pillars of Hercules and the start of the Mediterranean Steps. Bus fare: Approximately £2.20 for a single trip. A ticket to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve is also required to access the Mediterranean Steps, costing £13 for adults.
