Discover more about Ecclesiastical Museum of Alexandroupoli

The Ecclesiastical Museum of Alexandroupoli offers a captivating journey through the religious and cultural heritage of the Evros region. Founded in 1976 by Metropolitan Anthimos, the museum is located in the neoclassical Leontarideios School, a building with its own history, having served as a high school until 1972. The museum's collection comprises over 400 relics of ecclesiastical art, gathered from churches and monasteries in the area. The exhibits primarily date from the 16th to the 20th centuries and reflect the Christian traditions of both Western and Eastern Thrace. A significant portion of the collection consists of sacred artifacts brought by refugees from their homelands during the population exchange. Visitors can admire a diverse array of items, including icons, sacred vessels, priestly vestments, wood carvings, and old books. The portable icons form the core of the collection, showcasing exceptional artistry. Other notable exhibits include a part of the marble gravestone of Emperor Isaakios Komninos and the icon of the Trifotissa Virgin Mary, believed to be miraculous. The museum also displays gold-plated vestments of famous hierarchs and a reconstruction of a church with important exhibits from Agia Kyriaki of Ainos in Eastern Thrace. The museum provides insights into the relationship between the Church, society, and education in Thrace. It also highlights the differences in styles between Orthodox and Western iconography.
