Discover more about Acropolis Museum

Located in the historical Makriyianni district, southeast of the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum focused on findings from the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was founded in 2003 and opened to the public in 2009, replacing the old museum on the Acropolis. It was built to house every artifact found on the rock and surrounding slopes, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. The museum's design, by architect Bernard Tschumi, integrates the contemporary structure with the ancient history it houses. The building has a total area of 25,000 square meters, with over 14,000 square meters of exhibition space. The extensive use of glass provides views of the Acropolis, the surrounding hills, and the city of Athens. The museum also lies over the ruins of part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens, with a glass floor allowing visitors to view the ongoing excavations. The museum's collection includes sculptures, pottery, and other treasures. Highlights include the Archaic Gallery, with sculptures from the 7th to 5th centuries BCE, and the Parthenon Gallery, which displays the sculptural decoration of the Parthenon. The museum also has a ground-floor café and a second-floor restaurant with a terrace offering Parthenon views.
