Discover more about Holy Church of Saint Nectarios of Aegina

The Holy Church of Saint Nectarios, located on the island of Aegina, stands as one of the largest Orthodox monasteries in Greece and the Balkans. Dedicated to Agios Nektarios, a revered 20th-century saint known for his miracles, healing abilities, and prolific writings, the church and monastery complex is a major pilgrimage site. Built between 1904 and 1910, the monastery was founded by Nektarios himself to house a community of nuns. Nektarios settled on Aegina in 1908 and lived there for the last 12 years of his life. He was known for his piety and reportedly performed miracles, including healing a possessed man and bringing rain to end a drought, leading the locals to revere him as a saint even before his death. Officially recognized as a saint in 1961, Agios Nektarios is considered a source of hope for believers. The complex includes the main church, the Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity), chapels housing Saint Nectarios' tomb and relics, and his preserved living quarters. Visitors can explore the grounds, admire the architecture with its distinctive red-bowed windows, and visit the older Church of the Holy Trinity. Many faithful visit the tomb of Agios Nektarios, seeking healing and blessings. The Monastery celebrates Saint Nectarios' memory on November 9th (the anniversary of his death) and September 3rd (the retrieval of his relics). A strict dress code applies: shoulders and knees must be covered.
