Discover more about Virgin Mary Chrysoleontissa Holy Convent

The Virgin Mary Chrysoleontissa Holy Convent, located on a verdant plateau in the center of Aegina, stands as the island's most significant monastery. Dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, Saint Dionysios, and Saint Charalambos, it offers visitors a unique blend of spiritual reflection and historical exploration. Originally built in the coastal village of Leonti around 1600 to house the icon of Panagia Chrysoleontissa, the monastery was relocated to its present, more secure location to protect it from pirate incursions. Legend says that the builders' tools were mysteriously moved to the current site each night, leading them to believe it was divinely chosen. The complex retains its fortress-like appearance from the 17th century, featuring a square plan surrounded by tall cell buildings with turrets, battlements, and small windows. A three-story fortified tower, dating back to 1610, rises in the center. The monastery played a vital role in the Greek War of Independence in 1821, offering both spiritual and financial support. In 1935, it transitioned from a male monastery to a convent. Inside the church, visitors can admire the impressive wood-carved iconostasis from 1814 and the silver-plated icon of Chrysoleontissa, believed to date back to the 15th or 16th century. The convent also houses a large garden. The monastery celebrates its name day, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, on August 15th with a major festival. Visitors are welcome during daylight hours, except between 2-4 pm.
