Discover more about Syntagma Square

Syntagma Square, the heart of modern Athens, has been the city's symbolic center since the early 19th century. Designed in the 1830s as part of King Otto's vision for a grand capital, the square's name commemorates the 1843 uprising that demanded a constitution from the king. Overlooking the square is the Hellenic Parliament, formerly the Old Royal Palace, built in the mid-19th century. In front of the Parliament lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded 24/7 by the Evzones, ceremonial soldiers in traditional uniforms. The hourly changing of the guard is a popular attraction, with a more elaborate ceremony on Sundays at 11 am. Syntagma Square is more than just a pretty space; it's a place where Greek democracy comes to life. Throughout the years, it has been the site of pivotal events, celebrations, and political demonstrations. Today, it remains a lively meeting spot and a hub for commercial activity, surrounded by hotels, cafes, shops, and transport links. The Syntagma metro station, located beneath the square, is one of the busiest transport hubs in Athens and even features archaeological displays of finds from the station's construction.
