Discover more about Wall of Kassandreia

The Wall of Kassandreia, also known as the Diateichisma of Cassandreia, stands as a testament to the strategic importance of the Kassandra Peninsula throughout history. Constructed initially in the late Roman period, around the 4th century AD, the wall underwent repairs and expansions by notable figures such as Emperor Justinian in the 6th century and John VII Palaiologos in the 15th century. Its primary purpose was to defend the peninsula from invasions, effectively cutting off access at its narrowest point. The wall spans approximately 1200 meters from the Toronaic Gulf to the Thermaic Gulf, featuring a series of towers and a central gateway with a strong tower above it. Today, 17 of the original towers remain, with the wall reaching a maximum preserved height of 8 meters and a thickness of 1.5 to 3 meters. Over the centuries, the wall has witnessed numerous historical events, serving as a line of defense during the uprising of 1821. Despite partial destruction by the Huns in 540 AD and subsequent damage from the opening of the canal and the use of its stones for construction, the Wall of Kassandreia remains an impressive monument. Ongoing excavations, renovations, and landscaping efforts aim to highlight the monument, making it more accessible and informative for visitors.
