Discover more about Venetian Arsenal

The Venetian Arsenal of Gouvia, located in Gouvia on the island of Corfu, stands as a testament to the Venetian Republic's naval dominance in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Constructed in 1716, the arsenal served as a crucial shipyard for the Venetian fleet, providing a strategic base for maintaining and repairing ships. Corfu's strategic location near the mouth of the Adriatic made it a vital hub for Venetian naval operations in the Levant. The arsenal's construction followed the second great siege of Corfu by the Ottomans, as part of the Venetian effort to reinforce the island's defenses. The location was chosen for its proximity to forested areas, which provided a ready source of high-quality timber for ship repairs. The Gouvia shipyard was part of a larger network of Venetian arsenals and naval stations throughout Greece and even Venice itself. Although intended for extensive ship repairs, the Venetian Senate limited the Gouvia arsenal to basic maintenance to protect the interests of the main arsenal in Venice. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this once-thriving shipyard, including the three arched docks that were used to service Venetian fleets. While the roof is missing, the columns, walls, and arches remain largely intact, offering a glimpse into the arsenal's former grandeur. The site is located behind the modern marina of Gouvia, separated by an iron fence. Restoration efforts have been underway to preserve this historical monument, with plans to potentially convert it into a Museum of the Sea. A cornerstone at the entry gate is engraved with the year of construction, 1778.
